The Character of The King
Psalm 145
On what one topic did Jesus spend most of His time
teaching about?
The Answer: The Kingdom, or the Church.
Over and over again Jesus tells us about the Kingdom that he has come to
establish and our responsibility to that Kingdom, to the other members
of that Kingdom, and the ruler of that kingdom. Over the next few weeks
I want to look at the Kingdom that God has established, the members of
that kingdom, and the role of the Shepherds, Deacons, and Members in
that Kingdom.
But I think that we need to start tonight at the very beginning.
Less than a month ago, our nation was involved in a discussion about the
leadership of this country and the path we were on. Now I don’t want to
get in any type of political discussion here in class but I think that
this nation did something very interesting.
When the world around us seems in disarray and the future seems
uncertain we instinctively look for someone strong, trustworthy, and
wise to follow. In this last election, for the first time in many years
most people put their political parties aside and voted for the man whom
they most wanted to follow. Which led to a lot of the polarization in
our communities.
Think back over history. Think of someone, present or past who you knew
personally or knew from afar, who in your opinion was a great leader,
and tell us about that person’s character but do not tell us their name.
When one leader sincerely praises another, it is lofty praise. Tonight I
want to look at Psalm 145 and see what Israel’s greatest King had to say
about praising God.
Can I get a volunteer to read the entire Psalm out of the KJV?
1) According to this psalm who does David stress will worship God as
their King?
2) What is worship?
3) Let’s reread verses 1-7. Which of these qualities inspire or draw you
to worship?
4) In verses 5-7 we see David responding to others telling about God’s
qualities, what are the ways that he responded?
5) Has there ever been a situation when someone else talking about the
qualities of God, led you to respond in a similar way?
6) What do verses 8-13 teach us about God’s character and His Kingdom?
7) What are some things that you could personally do to reflect God’s
character tomorrow, next week?
8) What are some things that this church can do to reflect God’s
character in the coming weeks?
True Worship always breeds evangelism. As we recognize the glory of God
we cannot help to declare God’s worth to everyone. As we recognize all
that God has done for us we cannot help but tell others about God’s
Amazing Grace.
9) In verses 13 – 20 How does David say that God treats his creation?
10) So what do you believe is God’s Agenda for His kingdom?
We must notice that God’s agenda includes both Justice and Mercy.
11) David ends this Psalm in verse 21 talking about His reaction to God.
How can we have the same reaction?
