I.  Presiding Over The Table And Public Prayer

 

A. Think about who does a noticeable job of focusing the group.

 

1. Watch for a skill that you would like to develop.

 

2. Be a "good finder."

 

3. Be ready to vote for a winner.

 

C. Begin

 

D. Evaluate, reinforce, compliment after each speaker.

 

E. Vote for winner to be presented at conclusion of class.

 

1. Hand out voting cards.

 

2. Vote for one person.

 

3. Former winner not eligible.

 

4. Hand in voting cards (please fold the card if you vote for yourself.)

 

 

II. Reading the Bible In Public

 

A. THE PUBLIC READING OF GOD'S WORD HAS BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF MAN'S SERVICE TO HIM.

 

Nehemiah 8

 

Luke 4:16-21

 

Colossians 4:16

 

Revelation 1:1-3

 

                B. KNOW WHAT THE PASSAGE SAYS.

 

1. Questions which will aid in understanding the Bible.

 

a. To whom was this passage written?

 

b. Who is speaking?

 

c. What is the purpose of the passage?

 

Is it telling a story?

Is it a command?

Is it figurative?

Is it literal?

 

2. Be sure to know the meaning of all words in the passage to be read.

 

C. READ NATURALLY AND SIMPLY.

 

1. Do not try to imitate anyone else or to develop a "Preacher voice."

 

2. A brief introduction to the passage is often helpful.

 

a. One or two sentences.

 

b. Who was the writer and who was it written to.

 

c. Better to keep silent if not sure.

 

3. Know that you know how to pronounce every word.

 

a. Many Bibles have the pronunciation in them.

 

b. If your Bible is not marked, a Bible dictionary or encyclopedia will help.

 

c. Ask someone who reads well to help you.

 

d. Listen to the passage on the recorded Bible.

 

e. Know that everyone pronounces words a little differently. 

 

                Example: Tomato, Potato, Pecan

 

4. Speak clearly and pronounce your words.

 

5. Look at the audience occasionally.

 

a. Look at specific people.

 

b. Keep your place marked with a card, a book mark, or your finger, if necessary .

 

6. Observe the punctuation, not the verse markings.

 

a. If you have time, type out the verse with the punctuation and without the verse numbers.

 

7. Read the verse like it is the first time it has ever been said.

 

a. Be enthusiastic.

 

b. The Bible is an exciting letter not a dead book.

 

8. Find a version that is comfortable for you.
